During the 2022 Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD, students from SASES1 clubs around the country elected their 2023 national officer team. Student officer positions include President, Vice President, Member Relations Officer, Communications Officer, and Recording Officer. The officer team meets at least once each month via video conference and plans student events and sessions during the Annual Meeting. Additionally, all student officers attend the Spring Meeting (agronomy.org/undergrads/spring-meeting), which will be held in person at Kansas State University 20–22 Apr. 2023. Join us in welcoming our 2023 national SASES officers!

President—Chris Barron, Texas A&M University

“I am a junior with a double major in Plant and Environmental Soil Science and Biochemistry and a minor in Genetics and Statistics. I plan to pursue a career as a plant breeder, and I am interested in working on drought tolerance in different crops. I chose to run as a SASES officer because of all the amazing opportunities that this organization has offered me. I served as vice president last year, and I am excited to serve as this year's president. I am confident in the other officers who have been elected, and I look forward to getting to know my officer team so that we can make SASES 2023 the best one yet.

Vice President—Jake Walley, Auburn University

“I am a junior majoring in Environmental Science and minoring in Stewardship-Based Agriculture. I am the captain of the Auburn University Soil-Judging team, the treasurer of Auburn’s Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Club, and an undergraduate researcher. I chose to run for a position in SASES because I want to foster a dialogue across disciplines within the three Societies and between schools that participate in the meetings at an undergraduate level. In my free time, I am typically reading, cooking, or kayaking.

Recording Officer—Andrew Goebel, Purdue University

“ I am currently a junior majoring in Agronomy: Crop and Soil Management. I am also minoring in Agricultural Systems Management. I hope to work in pesticide research one day to discover new herbicides and fungicides. At Purdue, I am involved in Agronomy Club, soils judging, crops judging, Forage Bowl Team, and Agronomy Ambassadors, and I work in a soil lab on campus teaching students about soils and their importance to our lives. I ran for SASES Recording Officer so that I can serve other students who are interested in agriculture, form relationships with students from other universities and industry professionals, and inform people about the importance of agriculture. “

Communications Officer—Analeese Brewster, Oklahoma University

“I am looking forward to serving SASES over the next year as the 2023 Communications Officer. I am hoping to learn and grow as a leader, and I am most excited to help others learn and grow by doing my best to communicate well and interact with members! I wanted to run for office because of how respectable and positive SASES is as an organization. I am originally from West Texas and moved to attend school at Oklahoma State University (OSU). I currently am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Plant and Soil Science with a concentration in Crop Production and Management. I have a specific interest in cotton research and plan on attending graduate school where I hope to focus in cotton. I spend my summers doing internships to gain experience. Last summer, I worked for a crop- consulting company, and this summer I will be working for a cotton seed company helping with research. I am involved in the OSU Agronomy Club where I serve as a student council representative and have worked for the cotton extension program all semesters. I also was selected as a Freshman Research Scholar, which sparked my journey of undergraduate research. Outside of school and work, I enjoy spending time with my family at the lake, I like to bake, and I also enjoy crafts like painting, sewing, and leather work.

Member Relations Officer—Duncan McSorley, North Carolina State University

“I am a North Carolina native and junior at North Carolina State University (NCSU) studying Crop and Soil Sciences with a minor in Animal Science. I am an active member of the NCSU Agronomy Club and the North Carolina Chapter of Alpha Zeta, and I am the music director of NCSU’s all-male a cappella group: Grains of Time. Upon graduation, I hope to focus my career in either extension or agricultural consulting. I am passionate about building upon the community in agriculture and am very excited to be serving as this year's SASES Member Relations officer. In this role, I hopes to be able to help build and facilitate relationships among students at the ASA, CSSA, and SSSA Annual Meeting.”
