The Field, Lab, Earth Podcast: A convenient way to stay on top of the latest research

How do you stay on top of the latest agronomic, crop, soil, and environmental science research? Are you looking for a more convenient way? Try the Societies’ podcast, Field, Lab, Earth (FLE). Launched in June 2018, FLE promotes the work of ASA, CSSA, and SSSA researchers, authors, and members. The podcast has since received more than 50,000 downloads. Episodes feature interviews with experts on timely topics, ranging from precision agriculture to plant breeding, soil health to hydrology, supply chains to turfgrasses, ag literacy, science communication, education, greenhouse gas emissions, and more. The format is accessible to all ranges of knowledge.
The show recently featured a five-episode collaborative mini-series with the Societies’ Education Department about integrated pest management. In addition, there are interviews with plenary and keynote speakers from the 2021 ASA, CSSA, and SSSA Annual Meeting, including Dr. Rebecca Nelson, Heather Hampton-Knodle, and FAO Chief Scientist Ismahane Elouafi. Authors of newly released books published by the Societies also explain the importance of their book and can inform you whether it is right for your personal reference library. The show has looked back at some past advances in the agronomic sciences, discussing the history of seed banks, the challenges faced by early seed conservationist and agronomist Nikolai Vavilov, and the battle scientists faced when combatting the boll weevil in the southern U.S. Also, in a past episode, FLE discussed the latest (2018) farm bill, keeping you knowledgeable about federal policy. Upcoming topics in 2022 include urban agroforestry, microplastic transport in the vadose zone, plant breeding for specialized medical diets, the Clean Water Act (celebrating its 50th anniversary this year), and more.
To date, FLE has published more than 70 episodes. In the summer of 2020, the podcast partnered with the Societies’ Education Department to offer CEU credits for all episodes for CCAs and CPSS’s, and in October of 2021, the show launched on YouTube, one of the fastest-growing podcasting platforms. Journal articles featured on the show are also made free to read for the first two weeks after the episode launches. Limited-time discount codes are offered for featured books.
