Award, fellow, and scholarship nominations now open

Nominate a colleague who deserves to be recognized for their accomplishments! ASA, CSSA, and SSSA honor and celebrate the achievement of those in the agronomic, crop, and soil sciences to recognize excellence, leadership in research, education, industry achievement, and mentorship and bestows the prestigious designation of Fellow. Award and Fellow nominations must be initiated by 10 March with submissions due 17 March—consult the websites for a list of awards, scholarships, and fellowships and how to initiate a nomination: www.agronomy.org/awards, www.crops.org/awards, and www.soils.org/awards.

Below are scholarships, fellowships, and awards for students. Note that student scholarship and fellowship nominations must be initiated by 17 March with submissions due 24 March.

Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships

  • Clark Soil Biology Graduate Student Scholarship—recognizes a student working in the field of soil biology, biochemistry, or microbial ecology: one scholarship at $3,000.
  • Crop Science Graduate Student Scholarship—recognizes outstanding graduate students in a crop science field (open to Gerald O. Mott Meritorious recipients only): one scholarship at $2,000.
  • Frank D. Keim Graduate Fellowship—for undergraduate student recipients of the 2022 National Student Recognition Program pursuing a graduate degree: two scholarships at $2,000.
  • Gary “Pete” Peterson Dryland Soil Management Scholarship—recognizes a graduate student in the field of soil science: one scholarship at $5,000.
  • Nelson Yield-Limiting Factors Graduate Student Scholarship—recognizes graduate student leaders in the field of agronomy: five scholarships at $3,000.
  • Soil and Water Conservation Scholarship—recognizes a junior or senior undergraduate or master’s student in the field of soil and water conservation as well as their adviser: one scholarship at $3,500 and an additional $500 to their adviser.
  • Truog Soil Science Outstanding Dissertation Award— recognizes a recent Ph.D. degree recipient (received in 2021 for the 2022 award) who has made an outstanding contribution to soil science as evidenced by their Ph.D. thesis or dissertation: one scholarship at $2,000.

Undergraduate Scholarships and Fellowships

  • J. Fielding Reed Scholarship—for students pursuing a career in soil or plant sciences: two scholarships at $2,000.
  • Agronomic Travel Study Undergraduate Scholarship—for undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs: two scholarships at $2,000.
  • Soil and Water Conservation Scholarship—recognizes a junior or senior undergraduate or master’s student in the field of soil and water conservation as well as their adviser: one scholarship at $3,500 and an additional $500 to their adviser.
  • NEW! Academic Undergraduate Scholarship—provided to a meritorious undergraduate student pursuing a career in agronomic, crop, or soil science: one scholarship at $3,000.

Golden Opportunity Institute

This professional development program pairs talented undergraduate students with mentors to help cultivate networks to develop the necessary workforce to sustain the agronomy, crops, and soils professions. Selected students will receive financial support for travel, lodging, registration, and other costs related to attending the 2022 Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD. Up to 25 Golden Opportunity Scholars and 5 Greenfield Scholars will be selected for the 2022 Golden Opportunity Institute class.

Golden Opportunity Scholars

  • Students seeking further education.
  • Paired with a mentor who is a Society professional with similar interests and career goals.
  • Supported by the Golden Opportunity Fund through the Agronomic Science Foundation.

Greenfield Scholars

  • Students pursuing the Certified Crop Adviser (CCA)/Certified Professional Agronomist (CPAg) profession and certification upon graduation.
  • Paired with a mentor who is a CCA in their region.
  • Sponsored by ASA and the International CCA program

National Student Recognition Program

The National Student Recognition Program recognizes outstanding undergraduate seniors involved in crops, agronomy, soils, or environmental sciences. To be eligible, students must be current seniors at a four-year institution or a second-year student at a two-year institution, belong to an affiliated club of SASES, and be a member of ASA, CSSA, and/or SSSA. Students are selected by their departments based on their scholarship, leadership activities, and personal qualifications. The deadline is 28 February.

Recipients are also eligible to apply for the Frank D. Keim Graduate Fellowship if they meet all other requirements.

Gerald O. Mott Award

The Gerald O. Mott Meritorious Graduate Student Award in Crop Science recognizes top-notch graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in crop science disciplines. Departments select students based on academic achievements, research and teaching contributions, leadership accomplishments, service activities, and personal qualifications. Candidates for this award must have completed at least one year of graduate work leading to a M.S. or Ph.D. in a field of emphasis within any discipline related to crop science. Students must be enrolled in a U.S. college or university and be current members of the CSSA and/or ASA. The deadline is 28 February.

Recipients are also eligible to apply for the Crop Science Graduate Student Scholarship if they meet all other requirements.

Annual Meeting Graduate Student Travel Grant Opening Soon!

These funds will be awarded to a select number of qualified students who plan to present research at the 2022 meeting in Baltimore, are unable to attend the Annual Meeting without additional outside financial assistance (not fully supported by the professor, department, or program), and can provide justification outlining how meeting attendance will benefit their careers.

The Graduate Student Travel scholarships are provided through generous contributions from members and several matches from the Agronomic Science Foundation.
