In some instances, for example the state of Maine, the surplus may be driven by the high phosphorus needs of a particular crop, in this case, potatoes. Data from NuGIS (TFI, 2021a) and Soil Test Summary (TFI, 2021b); states with fewer than 10,000 soil test samples were excluded.

Opposite page: Plants with insufficient chloride show chlorotic and necrotic spotting along leaves with abrupt boundaries between dead and live tissue. Leaves wilting at margins and highly branched root systems are also typical chloride deficient symptoms, found mainly in cereal crops (Mengel & Kirkby, 2001). Chloride deficiencies are highly cultivar-specific and can be easily mistaken for leaf diseases.
