Graduate students face similar obstacles, regardless of program affiliation, but universities often differ in their professional development offerings, and advisers differ in their counsel. Few students are prepared to navigate through grad school without guidance. Many may miss key opportunities to advance their career without additional resources to lean on when they have questions. To address common graduate student concerns, the ASA, CSSA, and SSSA (ACS) Graduate Student Committee developed the 2020 webinar series, “Navigating the Grad School Adventure,” where experienced faculty, industry members, and fellow graduate students provided insight and advice on how to make the most of the graduate school experience.

Each session featured an informal panel with speakers providing input and perspective; students were able to submit questions throughout. These conversational webinars allowed students (both undergraduate and graduate) to learn about different approaches to getting the most out of graduate school for the following topics:

  • Getting Started in Grad School—What You Need to Know
  • An Introduction to Research Planning
  • Whether to Pursue a Ph.D.
  • Balancing Work and Education with Family and/or Various Interests
  • Internship Experiences in Grad School

If you missed the live sessions from 2020, recordings of each session have been posted to the Societies’ websites (member login is required, see links below). Members are encouraged to share these recordings with any new undergraduate or graduate student members or faculty who might be interested.

In 2021, the ACS Graduate Student Committee is offering another exciting webinar series titled, “Level Up Your Career,” where topics related to career development will be discussed. Webinars will be held from 12:00–1:00 pm central time and feature the following topics:

  • Developing your CV/Resume/Cover Letter, 17 February
  • Building an Online Presence, Preparing for the Job Search, and Interview Skills, 17 March
  • Career Opportunities (NGOs, International, Industry, Academia, and Post-doc), 14 April
  • Negotiating the Job Offer, 4 May

Through hosting and recording webinars, the ACS Graduate Student Committee hopes to continue building valuable resources for graduate student members throughout their academic careers and as they transition to the workforce.
