HomePublicationsCSA NewsIssuesCSA News: Volume 66, Issue 8People news July 29, 2021 Flis Named CAST President-ElectIn a recent election at the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST), Dr. Sally Flis—Sustainable Ag Field Manager with Nutrien Ag Solutions—was chosen to be president-elect for 2021–2022.Flis is a Certified Crop Adviser and is currently serving as the chair of the ICCA board. She is passionate about the agricultural and economic sustainability of growers in the U.S. She currently works with growers and crop consultants across the country to implement sustainability programs focused on carbon emissions, carbon sequestration, and improved crop production efficiency.In 2022–2023, Flis will become the 50th president of CAST, a singular honor and responsibility. The position dates to 1972 when Charles A. Black and Norman Borlaug, along with other committed scientists, spearheaded the movement to “bring science-based information to policymaking and the public.” Harvey Receives Honorary DegreeDr. Bryan Harvey recently received an honorary degree from the University of Saskatchewan. This is the most prestigious award that can be bestowed upon a member of the USask community, granted to those who have made a significant contribution to their community.A world-renowned barley breeder, Harvey spent four decades contributing to the field of plant science and to the Canadian agriculture economy through his work with the Crop Development Centre at USask. During his time at USask from 1966 until his retirement in 2005, he bred or co-bred more than 60 varieties of barley. His lifetime of achievement was recognized with appointment to the Order of Canada in 2007, induction into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2020, and being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
