Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, called the Borlaug Field Award, recognizes exceptional, science-based achievement in international agriculture and food systems by a researcher or extensionist under the age of 40. Recipients of this $10,000 award emulate the same intellectual courage, stamina, and determination in the endeavor to eliminate global hunger and poverty demonstrated by Dr. Borlaug as a young scientist working in Mexico in the 1940s and 1950s doing the work that would be recognized with the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize. The Borlaug Field Award has generated tremendous visibility for 2025 Recipient Derek Barchenger (pictured above), who said, "Last year I had the honor of receiving the Borlaug Field Award, and it has been one of the most meaningful recognitions of my career because of what it represents: Work that happens in the field. Work alongside farmers. Work that delivers real impact. If you know a researcher or practitioner under 40 who is making a tangible difference in agriculture, I encourage you to nominate them. There are incredible people doing transformative work every day who deserve to be seen."There will be informational webinars on Apr. 28, 2026 to guide nominators through the process. The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2026. Learn more Back to current issue Back to home Text © . The authors. CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. Except where otherwise noted, images are subject to copyright.
