Meet the 2022 SASES national officers

During the 2021 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT, students from SASES1 clubs around the country elected their 2022 national officer team. Student officer positions include President, Vice President, Member Relations Officer, Communications Officer, and Recording Officer.2 The officer team meets at least once each month via videoconference and plans student events and sessions during the Annual Meeting. Additionally, all student officers attend the Spring Meeting, which will be held–person at Iowa State University 7–9 Apr. 2022. Join us in welcoming our 2022 national SASES officers!

President—Cy’Heim McRae, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University
“I am a sophomore agricultural education student. I have been a SASES member for about three years now. I served as the member relations officer in 2021. I am a very outgoing person. I was most recently elected SASES President at the Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT in November. I wanted to serve as an officer because I felt that if we would have had an experienced SASES officer when we took office in 2021, it would have been easier for us to plan, navigate, and do other things that needed to be done. I hope that the membership increases. I experienced my first Annual Meeting this year and realized that it would be a great experience for others if they were aware of it. I look forward to serving everyone.”

Vice President—Christopher Barron, Texas A&M University
“Howdy y’all: my name is Christopher Barron, and I am a sophomore. I am originally from Slidell, LA, and I am double-majoring in Plant and Environmental Soil Science and Biochemistry with a minor in Genetics. I decided to run to be a SASES officer because I got to see firsthand what an amazing experience SASES was, and I wanted to be a part of organizing [SASES programming at the Annual Meeting].” I also believe that this will be a great opportunity to work with students who have a wide range of experiences and perspectives, and I am most excited about getting to meet with and learn about my fellow officers in the coming year.”

Recording Officer—Cade Bednarz, West Texas A&M University
“I am a junior and my major is in Plant, Soil, and Environmental Sciences. I grew up in Lubbock, TX where I worked for my family’s commercial application business; this is where my passion for agriculture began. I have many hobbies, most of them outdoors, from archery and competitive shooting to golf and camping. I am a senior team captain of my university’s soils judging team, I am a range master for the rifle club, and I also participate on the crops judging team. I am very excited to serve as an officer this year, and I hope to better this organization in any way I can.”

Communications Officer—Kristy Kohlhagen, Purdue University
“I am currently a sophomore at Purdue University. I am majoring in Agronomy with a minor in Farm Management. I grew up working on my family farm in northern Indiana where my passion for agriculture began. My involvement in FFA and 4-H solidified my passion for agriculture. At Purdue, I am currently involved and hold leadership positions in Ag Council, Purdue Soils Judging Team, and Agronomy Club. After graduation, I hope to work with farmers and help them achieve a successful crop as a field agronomist. I am honored to serve as a national SASES officer. I am looking forward to growing connections with other agronomy staff and students.”

Member Relations Officer—Parker Kliegl, Iowa State University
“I am currently a junior double-majoring in Agronomy and Seed Science. I hope to get a Ph.D. in plant breeding and work as a faculty member. I am involved in Iowa State’s Agronomy Club, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Council, Alpha Gamma Rho, and Bacon Expo. In my free time, I love traveling to all of Iowa State’s sporting events and even camping in line with friends for front-row seats. I am excited to be able to bring all of our members from across the nation together.”
