Hartemink named honorary member of IUSS

At the 2020 Council Meeting of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), Alfred Hartemink was elected Honorary Member. The honor is in recognition of his soil science excellence and outstanding service to global soil science. Hartemink has been (Deputy) Secretary General of the IUSS from 2001 to 2014 and currently chairs the IUSS Committee on Statutes and Byelaws and the Working Group on Digital Soil Morphometrics. He is currently the Chair of the Department of Soil Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

The IUSS is the global organization of soil science and has about 60,000 members. Since its formation in 1924, the IUSS has elected 18 soil scientists from the US as Honorary Members: W. Kelley (1950), E. Truog (1954), F. Bear (1960), L.A. Richards (1968), R. Bradfield, C.E. Kellogg (1974), H. Jenny, D. Kirkham (1986), R.W. Simonson (1990), R.W. Arnold, W.H. Gardner (2002), D.R. Nielsen, L.P. Wilding, B.A. Stewart (2004), J. Kimble, D.L. Sparks (2012), M.B. Kirkham (2016), and A. Hartemink (2020).
