Scientists demonstrate the importance of tidal marshes in removing excess nutrients from estuaries and watersheds
MADISON, WI, May 24, 2010 – A team of scientists measured nitrogen and phosphorus retention and carbon sequestration by tidal marsh soils along the Georgia coast to document the role of these wetlands in storing carbon and removing nutrients at the landscape scale. The results suggest that tidal marches protect aquatic ecosystems from eutrophication, caused by the accumulation of nutrients that disrupts ecosystems and reduces oxygen and biological diversity.
