CCA Photo Contest

Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) photo contest

CCAs face the challenge of protecting the environment and ensuring economic success for your clients, employer, and yourself. What inspires you daily to meet these challenges? Share your vision with the wider agricultural community by entering the CCA photography contest. This contest is open to all CCAs.

Photos will be judged by how well they portray the photo theme.

Preference given to photos that:

  • Show action
  • Have contrast: of light and dark colors, big and small shapes
  • Have an interesting camera angle
  • Show human interest (i.e., have people in them)
  • Portray the work of CCAs in their profession, preferably in the field
  • Represent planting, growing and harvesting

Specifications:

  1. Submitted images must be JPEG files no larger than 10 MB.
  2. Both landscape and portrait images may be submitted.
  3. Give a 3–6 word title and 10-word caption, and up to 50-word description for each submission.
  4. Photographer and submitter must be the same person.
  5. Up to 3 photos per category can be submitted.

*Upon submission, photographers give the ICCA program, the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America all rights to use the photo.

The picture was taken with my drone during potato cultivation in the Aroostook county, Maine. The picture shows the cultivators and the sprayers behind which applied the herbicide in need. On the horizon you can see the beautiful hilly country and typical houses of northern Maine.

A hop combine begins its first pass as the sun sets. This particular hop variety, Willamette, was determined to be mature just as the night shift came on. This photo was taken as the hop combine punched the first hole in this yard.

Soybean field assessment shortly after planting. Field walks and digging up plants is an everyday activity for an Agronomist, especially during spring. Here we are checking for emergence, planting depth, seedling health, and soil conditions. Soybeans are small but mighty and should push through this loamy and rich soil very well.

Blue skies and calm sunny days are rare during springtime. Here I’m checking on plant population and the implementation of a variable rate fertilizer prescription I created for this field. The drone is utilized throughout the year to monitor for irregularities hard to spot from the ground.

Evening Harvest

This Claas combine is straight cutting canola and is just about to fill the graincart with on the go. We were combining into the dark to get the crop off before the snow hit. The lights on after sunset make for a beautiful sight!

In-furrow Starter Fertilizer Trial

This replicated trial consists of 24 different treatments, including various fertilizer blends, soil microorganisms (bacteria, fungal species and mycorrhizae) and insecticides. The 4 row planter allows for precision seed placement, as each row unit has its own motor. Monitors in the tractor control the planter and fertilizer rates.
