Resolutions for Any Time of the Year

Greetings from the president’s desk! I hope the first month of 2023 has treated you well and you are making great progress on your New Year’s resolutions. Speaking of resolutions, did you make any that were related to soil science as a profession? If not, I’d like to give you a few ideas for resolutions that you can make now (no need to wait until 2024) to improve yourself, SSSA, and soil science as a profession.
- Invite at least one colleague or student to become a member of SSSA (soils.org/membership)
- Mentor a new/early career member
- Nominate at least one colleague for an SSSA award (soils.org/awards)
- Exchange ideas with members by starting one discussion board thread and responding to three threads (soils.org/discussion-boards/)
- Review at least one more journal manuscript than you did in 2022
- Invite a non-member colleague to publish in our journals (soils.org/publications/journals)
- Volunteer to serve on committees/task forces (soils.org/membership/committees/volunteer)
- Vote in SSSA elections
- Become a Certified Professional Soil Scientist (soils.org/certifications)
- Advocate for federal/state policies that increase funding for soil science research/education or that promote certification or licensing of soil scientists (soils.org/science-policy)
- Donate to the Agronomic Science Foundation (a-s-f.org)
Hopefully this list will get you thinking about how you can become more involved in SSSA and the profession of soil science while gaining personal and professional satisfaction. Feel free to reach out to me or any other SSSA leader or headquarter staff if you want to share ideas or become more involved. Even though the new year has already begun, it’s never to late to make resolutions.
